Election Signage

As a brand new candidate, there are so many different options related to how to campaign. For me, the decision I have made related to signage is related directly to my values and my personal choices.

I will not be using lawn signs. None of the signs you see are recyclable. If you go to the City of Guelph ‘Waste Wizard’ you will see (picture below) that cloroplast signs (the most common election sign) need to be put in your grey bin following the election.

Here is the result of using the Waste Wizard for election signs.

Even though I felt sure these signs could not be recycled, I wanted to be 100% sure, so I did my due diligence and asked the waste management staff in Guelph. This is the reply I received: “Unfortunately, neither the bag signs or the coroplast signs are recyclable (by us, or any plastic processor); however, the metal stands could be dropped off at WRIC as scrap metal.”

So, even if a candidate has signs that can be re-used in future elections (which I applaud) eventually they will all go into our landfills. Once there, some estimates claim that they could take over 400 years to decompose! That means that if I added elections signs to our landfill this year, they could potentially still be decomposing when my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great (that’s 16 generations) grandchildren are living in Guelph.

In my opinion, that is not environmentally friendly or responsible. By this stage in our lives, I think we are all able to say the right things when it comes to environmental issues. Everyone knows the ‘green-speak’. Everyone can talk the talk; few also walk the walk. I do.

In my opinion, integrity matters.

And, know this. If I am elected to City Council in October, I will make it a high priority to have council pass a By-Law that prohibits the use of lawn signs in any future elections unless they are proven to be recyclable.

I look forward to connecting with all of you over the next several weeks. Please use the forms on my site to connect, ask questions, make suggestions or sign up for my newsletter!
